Firefighters made quick work of dousing a blaze late Thursday morning in a building on the grounds of the Federal Penitentiary in southeast Atlanta.

Light smoke could be seen coming from the three-story brick building on McDonough Boulevard at 11 a.m.

Atlanta fire spokeswoman Marian McDaniel told the AJC that the fire started shortly before 11 a.m. on the first floor of the building, which is currently unoccupied and under renovation.

She said that workers were doing soldering, and that likely sparked the blaze, which was quickly brought under control.

No injuries were reported, she said.

The building is outside of the main prison walls, and the fire did not impact any buildings housing prisoners.
