A fire early Thursday heavily damaged a historic Cobb County-owned building under renovation in the Clarkdale park area, an official said.
About 2:47 a.m., 911 callers reported a brush fire that was soon upgraded, according to Dan Dupree of Cobb County Fire and Emergency Services.
The first crews that arrived said the historic Clarkdale Community Center, which was surrounded by a fence and locked gate, had burned to ground level, Dupree said.
The center was a wood-framed and sided structure, constructed in 1934. The building is included in the National Register of Historic Districts as a “contributing structure” to the historic Clarkdale Mill Village, one of the last developed “factory towns” in Georgia.
Crews put out hot spots and no injuries were reported.

Construction workers were at the site near Austell on Wednesday, Dupree said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
