A two-alarm fire heavily damaged a Clayton County apartment building early Sunday, leaving 10 units uninhabitable, fire officials said.

No one was hurt in the fire, which erupted around 2:20 a.m. at the Laurel Pointe Apartments in Forest Park.

"Pretty much six of the 10 units are destroyed, and the other four sustained smoke damage," Clayton County Battalion Chief Landry Merkison said. "We had the bulk of the fire knocked out within an hour and a half, then we still had hot spots to work on for the next couple hours."

The fire began on the lowel level, in the back of the building. An exact cause has not been determined.

Merkison said 12 residents were outside the building when firefighters arrived. Other residents were out of town.

The Red Cross is helping the residents relocate.
