Firefighters responding to a house fire in Chattahoochee County discovered two bodies inside, and based on preliminary findings, investigators say the deaths were a double homicide, authorities said Friday.
A blaze was reported shortly before 3 a.m. Tuesday in a home on Firetower Road in Cusseta, near the Alabama state line south of Columbus and just outside Fort Benning, according to the GBI. The bodies were found after the flames were extinguished.
The remains were sent to a state crime lab for an autopsy, and dental records will be used to positively identify the victims, the GBI said. Authorities did not disclose how the two died.
The owners of the residence were identified as Edward and Elaine Baker.
The GBI, State Fire Marshal’s Office, Chattahoochee County Fire Department and Chattahoochee County Sheriff’s Department are investigating. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Americus Field Office of the GBI, 229-931-2439.
