Cobb County firefighters were on the scene of a blaze early Thursday that caused major damage to a tire and auto repair shop in Powder Springs.
The fire broke out in the predawn hours at Mac's Tire Service on Austell-Powder Springs Road.
No injuries were reported.
Firefighters said the blaze caused heavy damage to the shop's three service bays, and burned up a car that was in one of the bays.
Smoke was still pouring from the building at 5 a.m., some 90 minutes after the fire began.
Cobb fire Lt. Dan Dupree told Channel 2 Action News that crews were able to keep the flames from reaching the main tire storage area of the shop.
Shop owner Kirk McCannon said his father started the business in 1971, and three generations of McCannons have worked there, providing a wide range of auto repairs.
While firefighters were able to keep the flames from reaching the tire storage area, “anything to do with automobile repair service, we lost,” McCannon told the AJC. “All the racks, the lifts, all that stuff’s gone.”
He said firefighters told him that when they arrived, the fire was already shooting through the roof of the shop, which was originally built in 1952 as a Gulf Oil gas station.
Austell-Powder Springs Road was shut down for about two hours between Sharon Drive and Old Austell Road while firefighters doused the fire. The road reopened just before 5:30.
