The Red Cross is helping a Buford woman Friday night after losing her home and car to a fire, authorities said.

Gwinnett fire fighters went to the house at the 2600 block of Suncrest Court around 5:30 p.m. to find flames shooting from the roof of the two-story structure,  Capt. Tommy Rutledge said.

The fire caused significant damage to the house, including the roof, and destroyed the car that was parked in the garage, Rutledge.

The woman who lives in the house was not home at the time. Rutledge said neighbors called 9-11 when they saw the structure on fire. The Red Cross will provide the woman with temporary assistance, he said.

Authorities continue to investigate what started the fire, Rutledge said.
