Fewer students counted on day one than expected

The number of students who showed up for school Monday was more than a thousand shy of enrollment projections by DeKalb County school officials.

Deputy Superintendent Kendra March said actual enrollment was 94,989, down more than 1 percent from the 96,432 expected. She added, however, that more students are likely to be added over the next few days. The numbers matter when calculating demand for teachers in a school system that has considered layoffs.

As of last week, there were 41 teachers too many, but March said Monday that another 23 had resigned or retired since then.
