Cobb County police say they are looking for three men who claimed to be police officers as they tried to break into a Marietta home early Wednesday.
The incident occurred around 5 a.m at a residence on Chisholm Trail.
A male resident heard the perpetrators banging on the back door demanding to be let in because they were the police, investigators said. When the man refused, the would-be robbers tried to force the door open.
After the man gathered his family in another room and called 911, the suspects fled the area, police said.
The suspects, one of whom had a shotgun, were described as three black males around 6 feet tall with thin builds. They were wearing masks and dark clothing, including vests with "POLICE" on the back. One man had multiple tattoos about his face.
Police urge residents to call 911 and talk to a dispatcher if they are unsure actual police officers are trying to contact them. After confirmation, people should follow the officers' instructions.
At residences, authorities usually will announce themselves at the front door and will be easily identifiable as law enforcement officials, Cobb police said.
Anyone with information on the attempted home invasion should call Cobb police at 770-499-3945.
