Atlanta's Department of Public Works has reopened the Fairburn Road Bridge over the CSX Railroad near North Camp Creek Parkway in southwest Atlanta. The bridge was closed in January and was replaced by the Georgia Department of Transportation. The bridge opening comes five months ahead of the projected year-end completion date.
The all-timber bridge structure was originally constructed in the late 1930s and had deteriorated over time. GDOT funded a replacement bridge at a cost of approximately $1 million, with the timber deck planks and handrail posts replaced.
"The project was listed as a priority in the city's Infrastructure Replacement Plan and we are pleased to have it reopened for the community," said Richard Mendoza, Atlanta's public works commissioner.
