Emory University President James Wagner will serve as vice chairman of a new committee to advise President Obama on bioethics.

The Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues will provide advice on emerging issues related to discoveries in biomedicine and other science and technology areas. The commission is expected to promote policies and practices that "ensure scientific research, health care delivery, and technological innovation are conducted in an ethically responsible manner," according to a White House news release.

“As our nation invests in science and innovation and pursues advances in biomedical research and health care, it’s imperative that we do so in a responsible manner," Obama said in a statement Tuesday.

Wagner has been Emory's president since 2003. The White House noted that during Wagner's tenure he has enhanced the university's Center for Ethics and championed the role of ethics within the institution's mission.

Before entering academia Wagner worked for nearly a decade as a researcher for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
