Eighth-grader brings gun to school

An eighth-grade student brought a handgun to a Griffin middle school Wednesday.

Students at Carver Road Middle School apparently saw the gun during a P.E. class and reported it to the resource officer, according to school officials.

The student was isolated while school administrators found the unloaded .25-caliber gun and a clip in the student's book bag. School officials reported the incident to the Spalding County Sheriff's Department.

The student's name was not released.

"We are thankful that our students came forward with information so a dangerous situation was averted," principal Eclan David said in a statement on the school district's Web site."We do not tolerate weapons on campus."

A letter was sent home to parents about the incident, David said. The school has about 450 students.
