The city of East Point announced Wednesday it will begin installing an automated two way meter reading system for electric and water utilities. The units are called Advanced Metering Infrastructure, or AMIs. The city intends to replace nearly all electric and water meters with the new wireless technology that can send usage data to East Point Power.

Once installed, the new system will be able to collect multiple remote meter reads per day and allow for a standard 30 day billing period, which may help customers to avoid paying a higher rate for their utilities. The system upgrade starts this month and could take one year to complete. A flyer will be sent to affected homes and businesses three business days before installation and again after completion.
