A bus company based in East Point was ordered for a second time to shut down Thursday by the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

The agency said in a news release that JCT Motor Coach Inc., which provides charter bus service in the Southeast, has been declared an imminent hazard to public safety.

The company tried to get around a previous out-of-service order by changing its name to JT’s Travel & Charter, the news release said, and Thursday's order applies to both companies.

"Safety is our number one priority," U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said. "If you are an unsafe, illegal bus company attempting to dodge federal safety standards and place passengers at risk by operating under a different name, we will find you and shut you down.”

The agency said the original order was issued due to the company's "numerous significant safety violations," including intentionally falsifying vehicle maintenance records.

The AJC left a message with the bus company Thursday seeking comment.
