The Dunwoody City Council on Monday will discuss amending its zoning laws to allow backyard chickens in residential areas.

The proposed change would allow only residents of single family homes to raise chickens. Owners of lots between 10,000 and 15,000 square feet could have up to six chickens.

Owners of lots 15,001 square feet to one acre could keep up to eight chickens. People who own more than one acre could keep more birds, based on an eight-birds-per-acre formula.

The ordinance would require chicken coops to be placed 35 feet from a rear property line and 15 feet from a side property line. Chicken keepers would need a permit from the city. Roosters would be prohibited.

The meeting starts at 7 p.m. in city hall, 41 Perimeter Center East.
