The Duluth City Council approved a FY 17 Budget amendment Monday for the construction of the George Rogers Avenue/Hospital Connector. The approval authorizes the lowest bidder CW Matthews Contracting Co. Inc. of Marietta to complete the work.

The contract authorizes $1,771,989 with a 10 percent contingency for a total contract award of $1,949,187. The city also authorized the transfer of $714,985 in 2014 SPLOST funds from the Davenport Road Extension project to the George Rogers Avenue project to cover a portion of the cost.

George Rogers Avenue, also known as the Hospital Connector, is a new east-west roadway that will connect the roundabout at the intersection of McClure Bridge, Irvindale Road and West Lawrenceville Street and Abbotts Bridge/State Route 120 adjacent to the proposed new entrance to Duluth High School. The proposed 1⁄4-mile roadway will have multi-use paths on both sides and a raised median, which will be sodded until future landscaping is installed.
