The state’s Department of Driver Services offices were up and running again Wednesday, a day after a computer glitch caused problems issuing driver’s licenses and identification cards statewide.
But a spokeswoman for the department advised packing plenty of patience if visiting an office on Wednesday.
“Today’s volume is expected to be extremely high, which will effect average customer wait times,” DDS spokeswoman Susan Sports said Wednesday. “If a trip to DDS can be rescheduled for later in the week, service wait times should be lower.”
Tuesday’s outage, which affected DDS offices statewide, “appears to stem from faulty network hardware,” said Alan Moore, MorphoTrust USA Senior Vice President for Program Operations.
The outage could not have come at a worse time.
“Tuesday is always the busiest day for visiting a DDS,” Sports said.
One frustrated customer e-mailed Channel 2 Action News, saying, “sitting in the Sandy Springs office with about 100 other poor souls who’ve already wasted an hour or so in line and now have no hope whatsoever of leaving with a valid driver’s license.”
The state is still working out kinks in carrying out a federal law that requires drivers to bring a slew of original documents to prove their identity and residency.
The new requirements, which have been in place in Georgia since last July, have caused confusion for drivers and led to waits of up to five hours.
