DOT's ‘14-car pileup' on I-85 actually eight ‘chain-reaction' type wrecks
What was first reported as a 14-car pile-up on I-85 in Banks County was actually eight separate accidents, according to the Georgia State Patrol.
Heavy rains in the area northeast of Gainesville led to the wrecks Trooper Gordy Wright called "chain-reaction type ... in the area that involved 20 vehicles."
The Georgia Department of Transportation initially reported one huge accident, describing a 14-vehicle wreck that closed all southbound lanes after 4:30 p.m.
Three tractor trailers were among the wreckage with injuries Wright called non-life threatening. Two people were taken to Athens Regional Hospital for treatment, and five more were taken to a Barrow County hospital, authorities said.
All roads were reopened 9:45 p.m.
