A rookie Doraville police officer whose traffic crash led to multiple charges including driving under the influence has been fired by his department, Channel 2 Action News reports.
Internal affairs investigators for the Doraville Police Department determined that the allegations against Officer Kasey Lindsey were too serious for him to remain on the force, police spokesman Gene Callaway told Channel 2.
"We're here to enforce the law,” Callaway said. “We're not above it, and just the fact that he had an accident and put someone in the hospital, that elevated the incident."
Lindsey had been suspended with pay since the Oct. 8 accident.
The 29-year-old officer was off duty and driving east on Memorial Drive just east of Rockbridge Road about 7:45 a.m. when his 2007 Dodge Charger ran into the rear of a 2010 Toyota Corolla, police said.
Lindsey was not hurt, but the driver of the other car, a 69-year-old Fairburn woman, was taken to Emory Crawford Long Hospital after she complained of back and neck pain, police said.
When a DeKalb officer asked for Lindsey’s driver’s license and proof of insurance, Lindsey allegedly produced his police badge. He told police that he had fallen asleep at the wheel, and an officer noticed an odor of alcohol, police said.
Lindsey admitted he had been drinking at Shooter Alley, a Doraville club. He had trouble keeping his balance during a field sobriety test and was placed in custody, according to the police report.
At the jail, Lindsey submitted to a breath test and posted a blood-alcohol level of .151, police said. He was charged with driving under the influence, following too closely and driving with a suspended registration and no proof of valid insurance.
