Four dissenting Atlanta school board members have hired their own legal counsel and, in a formal letter, said they were ready to go to court should the board not act Monday to reverse a takeover by five other members.
The move, which was expected, comes a week after Georgia Attorney General Thurbert Baker said those five members had no authority to do what they did last month: change policy to allow the removal of board leadership midterm. They then voted 5-4 to replace the board's chairwoman and vice chairwoman with new officers.
Baker's opinion, which is not binding, is the third received by the board that counseled against the change. Baker said the board's governing charter does not allow it. The board typically elects officers every two years, and its last election had been in January. The board's attorney also called the move illegal.
The board meets Monday for the first time since Baker issued his opinion.
