Disabled Peachtree City girl drowns in Florida pool
Authorities in Florida are investigating the weekend drowning death of a disabled Fayette County girl as an apparent tragic accident.
Alexis Holly Butler, 10, who had cerebral palsy and used a wheelchair, was visiting her grandparents' home in Fort Walton Beach, Fla., when she was found submerged in a pool Saturday afternoon, according to the Northwest Florida Daily News.
Fort Walton Beach police Sgt. Rob Millard told the newspaper that the Peachtree City girl's 13-year-old sister found her in the pool and alerted their father, who tried to revive her.
She was pronounced dead a short time later at Fort Walton Beach Medical Center.
Police do not suspect foul play and have classified the incident as an "unattended death/child drowning."
Alexis' parents are both Air Force majors, recently stationed at Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base in Montgomery, Ala.
In January, the Montgomery Advertiser reported that Alexis had been selected to receive an assistance dog this summer through a partnership of the Defense Commissary Agency, the Milk Bone Company and Canine Assistants, an organization providing dogs to people with disabilities.
