Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office detectives are investigating the death of a 3-week-old girl.

Deputies responded to a 911 call Monday morning from an Alex Street home about an infant who was not breathing, the sheriff’s office said in a news release Tuesday. They performed CPR on the infant before she was transported to Northside Cherokee Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The cause of death has not been determined, but there is a possibility that the infant was potentially smothered by accident while co-sleeping, Lt. Jay Baker with the sheriff’s office said. An autopsy was performed Tuesday and toxicology reports are pending.

The infant’s parents were at the home with a relative, who was believed to be caring for the child when she died, authorities said.

No charges have been filed. The investigation is continuing.
