A Haralson County sheriff's deputy who was struck by a vehicle Tuesday morning while directing traffic in front of the county's high school was in critical but stable condition by evening.

The officer was struck shortly before 7:30 a.m. in front of Haralson County High School on Ga. 120 near Tallapoosa, about 55 miles west of Atlanta.

Jim Beck, a spokesman for the sheriff’s department, told the AJC that Deputy Harry Hines was being transported by ambulance to Atlanta Medical Center. A helicopter ambulance was initially dispatched, but was called off because of fog.

Later in the day, at 7 p.m., the sheriff's office said the deputy's  condition was critical but stable.

Beck didn’t know whether the driver who struck the deputy was a student at the school.

“We don’t know anything about the circumstances other than he was hit by a car,” Beck said, adding that the driver stopped after the accident. “We don’t believe we are involved in a hit-and-run.”

Beck said Hines is a veteran deputy who had recently been assigned to direct traffic at the school.

“There are no simple policing activities,” Beck said. “Even simple things can turn very serious very quickly, as in a case like this.”
