DeKalb schools hire more legal counsel
DeKalb County schools hired another law firm on Monday night to assist in its lawsuit against Atlanta construction manager Heery/Mitchell.
The board voted unanimously to hire Elarbee, Thompson, Sapp & Wilson, LLP in Atlanta to represent board member Sarah Copelin-Wood and six former board members in the ongoing civil lawsuit.
The cost of the legal representation was not immediately available, school officials said.
The school system has already spent $15.5 million in the suit. The district is seeking $100 million from Heery, alleging fraud and mismanagement.
Last week, the suit was moved from federal to DeKalb State Court and 17 new defendants were added to the suit, including the individual board members and former superintendent Crawford Lewis. The board has not taken any action in hiring attorneys for Lewis and others yet.
