Dozens of viewers of Channel 2 Action News have stepped up to help an 87-year-old DeKalb County man whose home was trashed in a burglary.
Channel 2 reported earlier this week that Floyd Thompson returned to his home near Stone Mountain on Sunday after being away a few days visiting his children, and discovered someone had gone on a rampage inside the house.
Furniture was smashed, drawers were overturned and the intruders had urinated and defecated on Thompson's belongings. A couple of old hunting rifles and a small amount of cash were taken.
Calls and emails began pouring into the TV station after the report aired. The station put donors in contact with the family.
"It has just been tremendous the outpouring of love and kindness from the people that have contacted me. I can't believe there's people left like that in the world," Judy Parker, Thompson's daughter, told Channel 2. Parker has set up an account, the Floyd Thompson Donation Account, at Wells Fargo Bank to handle the donations.
Also, a Christian charity in Cumming has offered to donate a scooter and a couch, chair and new mattress set to replace the ruined furniture.
"We just want to help and bless this family as much as we can," Graham Skinner of the No Longer Bound charity said.
The family also has installed a security system with cameras to watch over the property.
Thompson, who has relied on a wheelchair to get around and has lived on $600 a month in Social Security, had these words for his new friends: "Thank you. You have all been so good, and I appreciate it."
