DeKalb County will host Geographic Information Systems Day on Wednesday to promote using the mapping technology to enhance science and information.

From 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Wednesday, county staff and professionals will give presentations on economic development, public safety, parcel maintenance and other uses of GIS. The event is being held in the Maloof Auditorium, 1300 Commerce Drive in Decatur, and is free to the public.

GIS is a computer-based mapping tool that takes information from a database about a location, such as streets, buildings, water features, and terrain, and turns it into visual layers, county officials said. The event is part of National Geographic Society’s Geography Awareness Week.
