The DeKalb County commission recently voted to override the chief executive’s veto of a new program that lets county workers buy large-ticket items at a significant markup through a payroll deduction.

CEO Burrell Ellis said the Purchasing Power program violates the state Constitution by creating a gratuity. He also noted that the broker for the program, state Senator Fran Millar, pledged to give 10 percent of his commission to the county but there was no information on how much the county will spend to administer the deductions.

The commission overrode the veto 5-2, with commissioners Kathie Gannon and Jeff Rader dissenting.
