Lewis Jones was voted Decatur school board chair during the Jan. 23 regular meeting by fellow board members while Tasha White was voted vice-chair. Jones just completed his fourth year on the board, while White has served two years.

“I appreciate the confidence the board has shown me,” Lewis said. “I have to admit I’m kinda nervous.”

Lewis is a partner at Atlanta’s King & Spalding, where he practices environmental law.

This continues the board’s practice of shifting around the top positions among its five members. Chair and vice chair were previously held by Annie Caiola and Garrett Goebel respectively. In fact each board member has been chair at some point excepting newest member Heather Tell who was sworn in Tuesday.

Tell ran unopposed in the Nov. 7 election when Caiola and Jones were also re-elected without opposition.

Tell replaces Bernadette Seals who’d been on the board 10 years and was the last board member dating to a time City Schools Decatur enrollment was about half of what it is today.
