Rescue crews had to extricate an armed robbery suspect from a wrecked car after a heist at a CVS pharmacy in southeast Atlanta. His alleged accomplice, who fled after the wreck, was captured a short time later.

The CVS store in the 500 block of Boulevard was robbed about 5:30 a.m., according to Atlanta police.

The suspects fled the store in a Honda Accord and later wrecked on Glenwood Avenue near Terry Mill Road.

One of the suspects was trapped inside the wrecked car, and the second ran from the vehicle. The trapped suspect was removed from the car and placed into an ambulance just before 7 a.m. His condition was not immediately available.

The second suspect was captured about 15 minutes after the wreck when he was tracked down by a Norfolk Southern Railroad police K-9 unit that was assisting Atlanta police in the search.

Police have not released the names of the suspects, who were in their late teens or early 20s.

Officers answering a call of an armed robbery in progress  saw two men with handguns run out of the CVS store and jump into a Honda, Capt. Van Hobbs told the AJC at the scene. Police chased the pair to Glenwood Road, where the driver of the Honda lost control in a curve and struck a utility pole.

Hobbs said police recovered two handguns from the car, as well as cash and cigarettes, and were trying to determine if they were taken from the CVS.
