Bank robbery suspect John Edward McCrary, also known as the "cross-dressing bandit," remains in critical condition after being shot Thursday night by Paulding County deputies.

The shooting came at the end of a four-hour standoff with McCrary at a home on Birch Street near Hiram, after he allegedly pointed a gun at deputies.

McCrary was airlifted to Atlanta Medical Center and underwent surgery early Friday morning.

Police have accused McCrary, 33, of the Halloween armed robbery of Marietta's BB&T bank branch in 1900 block of Sandy Plains Road.

Paulding sheriff's Sgt. Brandon Gurley said deputies went to the house around 8 pm. in response to a stolen vehicle being located.

"When they made contact with the person at the residence, he pulled a handgun and began threatening suicide," Gurley said.

"During the negotiations process, it was discovered that the person had active warrants for robbery and aggravated assault out of Cobb County," Gurley said.

That was the warrant from the Marietta robbery, when McCrary allegedly went into the bank dressed as a woman and told a teller, "Give me all your 20's, 50's and 100's, I have a firearm and I will use it," according to the warrant.

Police arrested McCrary's alleged accomplice, 24-year-old Megan Rae Haney, the day after the robbery.

While he was on the run, Marietta Police spokesman David Baldwin said was traveled to Douglas, Paulding, Cherokee and Henry counties.

Gurley said the Paulding County home McCrary went into Thursday night belonged to an acquaintance "he had just recently made."

The homeowner was at home when McCrary arrived, but was allowed to leave and was kept safe by sheriff's deputies, Gurley said.

He said that after several hours of negotiations, "the suspect eventually pointed the gun at deputies, forcing them to fire their weapons, striking the suspect."

Baldwin said Marietta police are asking anyone who may have encountered McCrary since Oct. 31 to contact them at 770-794-5477.

Gurley said charges, likely to include aggravated assault, are pending against McCrary in Paulding.
