Powder Springs council candidate disqualified
A candidate for the Powder Springs City Council has been disqualified. The decision regarding the candidacy of Edith PageGude, a registered nurse and business owner, was made Monday by the Cobb County Board of Elections and Registration, said Cobb elections director Janine Eveler in a news release.
PageGude’s candidacy was challenged by Charles Hudson, claiming her residence was outside the city. In a Sept. 7 statement to the AJC, PageGude said she had been a city resident for 16 years. Councilwoman Rosalyn Neal will face Rick Perry in the Nov. 8 election. Carolyn Cunningham for the AJC
Cobb Arts Ball fundraiser Oct. 15
The theme for the 4th Annual Cobb Arts Ball is “The Art of the Masquerade.” The event, which takes place from 6:30 to 11 p.m. on Oct. 15 at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center, 2800 Cobb Galleria Pkwy., benefits the Endowment Fund of the United Arts of Cobb. Charter schools decision on Thursday
Parents at two Cobb County charter schools will learn this month whether they must enroll their children elsewhere. The International Academy of Smyrna and the Imagine International Academy of Mableton are seeking charter renewals to be decided Thursday.
The Cobb school board is to vote then on school system recommendations to deny the Mableton school and to approve the Smyrna school. Cobb officials also recommended denial of two new charters for the STEAM Academy of Cobb and the Turning Point Charter Leadership Academy School of Excellence. Ty Tagami
Event raises money for transplant group
On Sept. 17, Chef Henry Chandler hosted the 2nd Annual Cajun Celebration at Henry’s Louisiana Grill in Acworth. The event raised over $11,000 for Cobb County’s organ transplant community. Proceeds go to the Georgia Transplant Foundation (GTF) and will be used for Cobb County residents who are facing expenses associated with organ transplant. Library trustees to discuss hours, funding
The Gwinnett County Public Library Board of Trustees will discuss new service hours and a private fund-raising plan at 5 p.m. Thursday at the Suwanee Branch, 361 Main Street, Suwanee.
Faced with reductions in county and state funding, the library board is considering closing libraries up to two days a week.
It’s also considering a plan to raise money from private companies and people to make up for lost tax dollars.

Safety festival Saturday at Coolray Field

Grayson High student wins competition
A Grayson High student has won a national title from the Future Business Leaders of America. Bradley Newton, who participated in a student competition at the group’s national conference, was chosen as first place winner of the Help Desk challenge. Bradley received $700 and a trophy.

Artwork auction fundraiser on Sunday
Kudzu Art Zone will host a studio open house 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Canton teen dies after boogie board accident
Authorities say a Georgia teen has died three days after she was pulled unconscious from the ocean near Garden City, S.C.
The Horry County Coroner’s Office said 18-year-old Savannah Kinkaid of Canton, Ga., died at a South Carolina hospital Monday morning.
Authorities say Kinkaid was riding a boogie board in rough surf Friday when she fell into the water. Witnesses pulled the teen from the water and were performing CPR when paramedics arrived. Associated Press

DeKalb wants $297 million extra for rail line
DeKalb County Commission wants another $297 million to fully fund a rail line in south DeKalb.
The transportation draft list already includes the first $225 million for the I-20 rail from the Indian Creek MARTA station to Wesley Chapel Road. Tuesday’s resolution calls for the additional money, to get the train line built on that 5-mile stretch.
“It is something,” Commissioner Lee May said “However, $225 million is not enough to produce one track of rail in south DeKalb.”
The I-20 train line is one of 18 projects in DeKalb of the 150 on the regional draft list expected to be finalized Oct. 15.

Man gets life in toddler beating death
A DeKalb County man was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole Tuesday for the beating to death a 2-year-old girl who was in his care. Diamone Wilson was admitted at a DeKalb County hospital on July 15, 2010, with a head injury and she died three days later. The medical examiner said she also suffered trauma to her arms, liver and pelvis. Robert Alexander, 30, was convicted of her murder. Homeowners association sues East Point candidate
East Point City Council candidate LaTonya Martin is being sued by her homeowners association, which says she owes $3,900 in unpaid maintenance fees. Heritage Park at East Point filed suit in Fulton County Magistrate Court earlier this month, also seeking 10 percent interest, court costs and attorneys’ fees. Other than a $200 payment last week, Martin hasn’t made a quarterly payment in several years, association attorney Dana Tucker Davis said.

Henry firefighters to have practice drill
This week the Henry County Fire Department is hosting a “live” ammonia release drill and hazmat training exercise, culminating with the live release of anhydrous ammonia Thursday at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
