Police issue Mattie’s Call for missing woman, 80

The Cobb County Police Department’s Crimes Against Persons Unit has issued a Mattie’s Call for 80-year-old Mary Yates of Acworth.

According to investigators, Yates was last seen by her daughter at 4:30 p.m. Saturday leaving their home at 5725 Brookstone Walk for church. She should be driving a white 1994 Toyota Corolla bearing a Georgia tag of 407 TMG.

Anyone with information regarding Yates is asked to call 911.

Schools want input on redistricting

Cobb County is planning to open three new elementary schools in the Smyrna and south Cobb area. An initial meeting to discuss potential redistricting is will be 6:30 p.m. May 17 at Campbell High. MUST Ministries to celebrate 40 years

Tourism promoted today on Silver Comet

Tourism in Powder Springs will be promoted today.

This free two-hour event of National Tourism Week will begin at 4 p.m. at the Florence Road Trailhead of the Silver Comet Trail off U.S. 278.

Schools to get award for counseling programs

Cobb Symphony changes its name

The Cobb Symphony Orchestra is now the Georgia Symphony Orchestra. Michael Alexander, the orchestra’s music director, said the change will allow the orchestra to expand to underserved areas and also have a common name with its other programs, the Georgia Youth Symphony and the Georgia Center for the Arts. County gets more money for flood damage

Gwinnett County will receive another $1.5 million from state and federal agencies to help pay for damage caused by a September 2009 flood. County officials Friday said the Gwinnett water resources department will receive $773,989 from the Federal Highway Administration to repair drainage culverts damaged during the flood.

The transportation department will get $740,469 from the Georgia Department of Transportation to repair the Lawrenceville Suwanee Road bridge over the Yellow River and the Club Drive bridge over Sweetwater Creek. David Wickert

Chase bank gives $25,000 to Cumming charity

New York-based Chase bank is giving a $25,000 grant to No Longer Bound Inc., of Cumming, as part of the Chase Community Giving Program. No Longer Bound provides inpatient recovery from addiction, support programs, distributes food and clothing, and provides automobiles to people in need.

No Longer Bound is now among 100 charities in 27 states and Washington, D.C. that now have a chance to receive a $500,000 grant from the bank.

Attorney: No open meeting violation

Forsyth County attorney Ken Jarrard said three county commissioners who met in the lobby of Cumming City Hall Feb. 3 did not violate the state Open Meetings Act, as former commission candidate Terry Sweeney claimed in a complaint last month to the Attorney General of Georgia. In an April 29 letter to the Attorney General, Jarrard said the meeting of commissioners Brian Tam, Patrick Bell, and Pete Amos didn’t violate state law because a meeting “requires more than assembling,” and all they did that day was briefly encounter each other in the lobby. Creekview kids compete in rocket contest

The Creekview High School Aeronautics Team will compete in the finals of the world’s largest rocket contest to be held Friday in Plains, Va., near Washington D.C. Creekview is among the 100 best teams across the nation, earning a spot in the Team America Rocketry Challenge finals. Sandy Springs buys flood-damaged homes

Sandy Springs has closed on the first of six houses damaged in the 2009 floods that it is buying with state and federal money. The city received $2.7 million to buy the six homes, demolish them and level their lots. The city bought the first property on Pine Forest Road for $400,000, two weeks ago. City to hold hearing on proposed budget

The Atlanta City Council will hold a public hearing Thursday to give residents a chance to comment and ask questions about the city’s proposed $545 million budget.

Atlantic Station buys security camera system

Atlantic Station has become the latest community to buy a public safety surveillance system. The 138-acre complex in Atlanta includes 15 million square feet of commercial space and 5,000 residential properties.

With a surveillance system from Iron Sky, police can monitor shoppers and residents with map-based software and HD video images.

Officers can access footage from 50 cameras around Midtown Atlanta.

Two new judges appointed in Dunwoody

Two new judges have been appointed by Mayor Ken Wright to the municipal bench in Dunwoody. Michael Hawkins and Kenneth Wickham will serve as part-time judges for court hearings in the city.

Hawkins, who earned his law degree from Emory University, is the principal attorney for the Hawkins Law Firm. Wickham, a graduate of Marshall Law School, is the chief judge for Norcross Municipal Court and a visiting judge in Gwinnett Recorders Court. April Hunt

Man killed in crash on I-85 ramp

A man was killed Monday morning when he drove his Honda Fit into the rear of a tractor-trailer truck parked on the shoulder of a southbound ramp on to Interstate 85 in DeKalb County, police said.

Spokeswoman Mekka Parish said investigators do know why the man left the road that feeds cars from Pleasantdale Road in DeKalb County onto the interstate. His name was not released because relatives have not been contacted.

There was no one in the truck. No one else was hurt in the 8:30 a.m. crash.

Schools to hold meeting on cell phone towers

DeKalb County Schools will hold community meetings this week to discuss a proposal to install cell phone towers at various school in the county. The presentation will be made by representatives of T-Mobile. The district is considering the towers, which are located at school sites in other counties, as a way to bring in additional revenue. Decatur cited for being pedestrian friendly

The Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center has named Decatur as a Silver Walk Friendly Community for its walkability initiatives and programs.

Decatur homeowners can earn up to $1,000 in rebates for home improvements under a new energy efficiency program. Peachtree City to decide on alcohol sales Nov. 8

Peachtree City voters will decide on Nov. 8 whether to allow Sunday package sales of alcoholic beverages.

On May 5, the City Council of Peachtree City unanimously approved adding a licensing referendum to the existing elections ballot for City Council Posts 1 and 2. If approved by a simple majority, the measure would allow the city to begin issuing licenses for package sales that would include Sundays between 12:30 and 11:30 p.m. Licensing details and implementation timetables have not yet been specified. Parents who register their students early for Fayette County’s 2011-12 After School Program will get a 10 percent discount off the $50 registration fee and the first week’s tuition.

Due date extended for stormwater bills

Due to a problem with a billing company, Peachtree City residents have until May 16 to pay their annual residential Stormwater Utility invoices.

The bills were mailed late and have a May 1 due date printed on them. Payments can be made without penalty either by mail or in the drop box outside City Hall. Renters are asked to forward the bills to their property owner for payment. Monthly billing was not affected. Information: 770-631-6385.
