Water district hosts photo contest
The Metro North Georgia Water Planning District is hosting a photography competition that will focus on the heritage, beauty and character of the region’s natural water resources.
The competition is open to photographers 18 and older. Participants may submit up to three entries. There is a $500 first-place prize and 11 finalists will receive a $100 prize.
Photographs of lakes, streams and rivers must be taken within the geographical boundaries of the 15-county water district. Deadline: Aug. 8.

Powder Springs council on summer schedule
Powder Springs Mayor Patricia Vaughn and the City Council begin their summer schedule of reduced meetings this month through September.

The Gwinnett court system has launched a website at www.gwinnettcourts.net that is easier to navigate and will provide online resources for obtaining information and conducting business with the courts. Hapeville seeks input on arts district plan
The city of Hapeville is seeking community input on the possible establishment of an arts district overlay that would create new standards aimed at encouraging art studios and housing in the downtown area.

Spring Hill Elementary gets pre-k program
Spring Hill Elementary School in Fayetteville has been awarded a lottery-funded pre-kindergarten program for 2014-15.
Registration for the selection lottery is available until July 25. Residency information and the child’s birth certificate must be presented.

Henry
National Night Out set for Aug. 5
Henry County’s public safety agencies are hosting the annual National Night Out 5:30-8:30 p.m. Aug. 5 at Henry Town Center, McDonough.
It is a free event for the whole family where parents and children alike will have an opportunity to meet community leaders and various law enforcement officers and get a first-hand look at some of the equipment, vehicles and apparatus they use to keep citizens safe.
There will be various demonstrations as well as public safety displays from the CAGE gang task force and SWAT team members. There will also be free food and giveaways from area merchants plus other family activities including live music.
