Police offer vacation checks

Powder Springs residents can relax somewhat while on vacation -- thanks to their police department’s “Vacation Checks” program.

Police officers will stop by the residences of those who request this assistance “once a day” to “check your windows, doors and back of your house.”

Gwinnett Medical named one of best

Gwinnett Medical Center hospitals in Duluth and Lawrenceville have been named to HealthGrades America’s 100 Best Hospitals and are the only Atlanta area hospitals awarded the honor, and one of only three in Georgia. Recognition is based on a hospital’s risk-adjusted mortality and complication rates. On average, patients treated at America’s 100 Best Hospitals had nearly a 30 percent lower risk of death.

Cherokee takes applications for grants

Cherokee County officials are accepting 2013 program year applications for projects under the federal CommunityDevelopment Block Grant program. Projects that will be considered for grant awards include renovation and construction of public facilities and affordable housing projects. GSU will lead reading research project

Georgia State University will lead a $10 million federal research project aimed at improving reading skills in children who are deaf or hard of hearing.

The university’s education college will create the National Research and Development Center for Literacy and Deafness which will work with other centers focused on special education issues.

Researchers will study how these children learn to read, with a strong focus on improving reading skills for kids in kindergarten through second grade.

Buy a brick to support library branches

Library supporters can make a concrete gift to four branches -- Hairston Crossing, Salem-Panola, Stonecrest and Tucker through a fundraising program.

For $100, bricks will be inscribed with a donor’s name, family or company, or in memory of a loved one and then installed in the library entryway.

All money will go to the DeKalb Library Foundation for all 22 county libraries.

Junior Police Academy takes applications

The Fayetteville Police Department’s Junior Police Academy is accepting applications for students grades 7-10.

The academy will be held July 23-26 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Recruits will be taught about police work such as vehicle stops, crime scene processing, physical fitness, defensive tactics and team-building skills. Applications are due June 1.
