Forsyth schools head announces retirement

Forsyth County Schools Superintendent L.C. “Buster” Evans says he plans to retire from public education June. 30, making the announcement at Thursday’s Board of Education meeting.

Evans has headed the Forsyth district since 2007, during a period of both rapid growth, and budget cuts forced by The Great Recession. Evans told board members that, although retiring, he still plans to work on learning and career development opportunities for adults.

New date for library ground breaking

Ground breaking for the Palmetto branch of the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System has been rescheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday at 9111 Cascade Palmetto Highway.

The Jan. 30 date was canceled due to snow.

The 10,000-square-foot library is part of the first phase of the library building program approved by Fulton voters in 2008.

Roswell documentary screening rescheduled

A screening of the documentary “Three Minute Activists: The Soul of Slam” will take place at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Aurora Cineplex, 5100 Commerce Parkway. The original screening date of Feb. 12 was canceled due to inclement weather.

“Three Minute Activists: The Soul of Slam” was filmed during the 2013 Roswell Roots Poetry Slam, and is part of the Roswell Roots Festival this month. Admission is free, but a check-in wristband is required.

Council approves city manager’s raise

The Marietta City Council approved raising city manager Bill Bruton’s salary to $187,500, a 5 percent pay increase. Bruton’s contract was extended through Dec. 31, 2017. Registration open for homestead exemptions

Senior citizens in Peachtree City can begin applying for their annual homestead exemption.

Qualifying homeowners must be age 65 or older by Jan. 1, 2014, and have a household income under $30,000. Forms are at City Hall and must be filed with documentation by Feb. 28. Info: 770-487-7657 or info@peachtree-city.org.

Clayton

Clayton to offer storm debris pickup

In response to the recent ice storm, Clayton County has created a storm debris removal program. The curbside service begins Wednesday.

Citizens in unincorporated Clayton must contact the county by noon Tuesday to have their debris picked up. To submit your address for pickup, call 770 473-5938 or email communications@co.clayton.ga.us. Place your debris and tree limbs at curbside.
