A 31-year-old man was speeding, police said, when his vehicle left a Cobb County road early Sunday and hit a utility pole, killing him.

According to a witness, the man “was traveling well above the posted 45 mph speed limit” when his silver 2002 Chevrolet Suburban left the roadway, Officer Sarah O’Hara said in a statement.

Police identified the driver as Cupertino Mendoza of Marietta.

The SUV was heading northeast on Powder Springs Road near Anderson Farm Road when the crash happened about 12:45 a.m., according to investigators.

Mendoza was taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, O’Hara said.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 770-499-3987.

The crash was one of two deadly wrecks in Cobb early Sunday. Two people were ejected in a crash along I-75 about 3:15 a.m. Their names have not been released.
