I-75 southbound in Clayton County was shut down for five hours Sunday morning after a pedestrian was hit and killed by a tractor trailer.
The victim, who police did not identify pending notification of his family, was pulled over in his 2011 GMC Yukon by an officer just after 5 a.m. for driving 75 mph in a 55 mph stretch between Jonesboro Road and Mount Zion Boulevard, Morrow Police Capt. James Callaway said.
The officer, smelling alcohol, administered a field sobriety test to the man, who failed the exam. He then arrested him and had placed one handcuff on the man when he struggled and broke free, Callaway said. The man then ran across the southbound lanes when an approaching tractor trailer struck him.
Police said the driver of the rig couldn't avoid the man and that he is not expected to be charged.
