Carjackers who used a minivan to stalk their victim were captured Wednesday evening after Atlanta officers spotted the victim’s stolen Saab 9-3 Turbo and chased it, police said.

The carjacking happened shortly before 7 p.m. Tuesday in the 500 block of Ralph D. Abernathy Boulevard, police said. The Saab’s owner told officers he had just entered a parking lot when a gold-colored minivan pulled behind him and blocked him in.

One suspect got into the Saab, produced a handgun and ordered the victim out of the car, and the assailant drove off with the minivan following him, police said.

About 6 p.m. Wednesday, members of the Atlanta Police Auto Theft Task Force spotted the Saab near University and Pryor streets. After a short pursuit, the vehicle was stopped on Mead Street. Two people were taken into custody, and a handgun was seized.

The suspects’ identities were withheld pending further investigation. They were charged with hijacking a motor vehicle, theft by receiving a stolen auto and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, according to police spokesman Sgt. Curtis Davenport.

No injuries were reported in the case.
