Before following a woman home and trying to abduct her from her front porch, Jamez Maclin spent 15 minutes driving around a Buford Walmart parking lot, a Gwinnett County detective said Friday.

Maclin was charged with kidnapping and battery after the Aug. 23 incident. He had a preliminary hearing at the Gwinnett County Detention Center on Friday afternoon.

When the victim was backing her car out of the parking lot around 11:30 p.m. Aug. 23, she almost hit Maclin’s white BMW because he had pulled up so closely behind her, Det. Michael Poppe said. It was then that the victim got a close look at the car, which had distinctive damage on the front driver’s side, the detective said.

The victim noticed the white BMW following her home for about a mile and later saw it park in a cul-de-sac near her home when she was parking in her driveway. She assumed the driver was a neighbor and “didn’t think anything of it,” Poppe said.

As the victim was opening her front door, Maclin ran up behind her and grabbed her arm, pulling her away from the home, Poppe said. She screamed and grabbed on the door frame to prevent him from dragging her away; the scream alerted her mother, who ran toward the door and screamed at Maclin, according to the detective. Maclin then ran and fled in the white BMW.

Surveillance video captured Maclin parking his car in the Walmart parking lot and entering the store, Poppe said. Police were soon dispatched to the Walmart in search of the white BMW, which they found with a red hat the victim saw Maclin wearing stuffed under a seat.

At the same time surveillance cameras captured Maclin exiting the Walmart, police had surrounded the white BMW, Poppe said. Maclin then left the store on foot and attempted to report his car stolen the next day, according to Poppe.

Maclin is being held at the Gwinnett County Detention Center without bond. The issue of bond will be addressed in superior court in a later date, Judge Sandra Fluker said.
