“This is a juvenile red-bellied woodpecker taken in my yard,” wrote Lowell Sims. “Woodpeckers and lots of other birds do not develop their adult colors until maturity. For woodpeckers, it is usually around a year of age. Baled Eagles take about four years to mature.”
