The Cobb County Board of Commissioners decided Oct. 10 to spend nearly $1 million to replace 18 manholes.

K. M. Davis Contracting Co. Inc., the low bidder at $998,050, will replace the manholes for the Tanyard Creek Outfall Manhole Replacement Program. Receiving flows from a major upstream pump station, the Tanyard Creek Outfall Receiving has been impacted by hydrogen sulfide for a number of years, according to Stephen D. McCullers, director of the Cobb County Water System.

Recent evaluations have revealed that 18 manholes in the area are in marginal condition because of the hydrogen sulfide acting on the concrete surfaces, he added. Also, McCullers said internal inspection of the connecting pipelines revealed the need for repair at a few locations but no deterioration of pipeline integrity.

The proposed project includes replacement of 18 impacted manholes with composite manholes that are resistant to the effects of hydrogen sulfide, repair of connecting pipelines as necessary and the extensive bypass pumping required to allow the work to be done while the system remains fuctional, he added.
