Cobb chairman pushes for shared county, school SPLOSTs

Nov 12, 2011

Cobb County Commission Chairman Tim Lee plans to ask the county delegation to support a change to state law that would allow local governments and schools to share penny sales taxes instead of collecting separate taxes from residents.

Lee will make his pitch Monday in Marietta, and will propose allowing voters to decide whether to amend the state constitution to allow for the shared special purpose local option sales tax.

Lee’s proposal comes as some metro area leaders are weighing voters’ appetite for taxes in advance of a penny tax referendum next year to pay for regional transportation projects. Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, for example, tried unsuccessfully to get an Atlanta education tax that passed this week reduced to less than a penny.

Cobb is in the middle of a five-year school SPLOST, and residents narrowly approved a four-year county SPLOST earlier this year. Residents in several other metro area counties approved school SPLOSTs this week.
