Two more properties were added to a group of homes in Cobb County eligible for federal buyout funds due to 2009’s historic flood.

Cobb received a $5.9 million grant from FEMA to buyout 34 homeowners whose properties were substantially damaged and in the 100-year flood plain. The grant was amended to add the two additional properties in Acworth and Austell.

FEMA will provide 75 percent of the funds, 10 percent will come from the state emergency management agency and Cobb is responsible for funding the remaining 15 percent. The two-property addition, approved by commissioners Tuesday, increases the total grant to $6.5 million, and Cobb’s contribution by $85,542 to about $971,300. The additional money will come from the county’s stormwater repair and restoration budget.

Commissioners also approved a contract with Abatech Services, Inc. of Snellville to demolish the homes. The company’s $397,353 bid price was the lowest of five bids received.

Once the homes are demolished, the county will be required to keep the land as greenspace. Thus far, the county has acquired 18 of the original 34 homes.
