Clean-up work after a gasoline tanker truck overturned on Winder Highway in Gwinnett County is expected to continue through Wednesday, with the Georgia Department of Transportation saying it will repave the damaged roadway Thursday if the weather permits.

Winder Highway  - Ga. 8 -- north of Ga. 316 near Dacula and Lawrenceville was closed for several hours Monday after a tanker carrying 8,500 gallons of gasoline overturned after being involved in a wreck, according to Lt. Eric Eberly of the Gwinnett County Fire Department.

Two people were transported to Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville, where they were listed in stable condition with moderate injuries, he said.

Crews from the state Environmental Protection Division and clean-up company SWS were on the scene overnight cleaning up. About 2,000 gallons of spilled gasoline were recovered from a nearby creek Monday night.

Ga. 8 currently is open to traffic, but it is a rough ride for motorists because of the damaged asphalt, DOT said in an email Tuesday afternoon. The road surface was dissolved by pooling gas, and much of the smaller aggregate was washed away during the continuing clean-up.

DOT recommends that motorists avoid the area until repairs are finished. “If you must travel in this area, slow down and allow extra time as EPD and Georgia DOT crews work,” DOT said.

Wednesday, the state EPD will continue clean-up efforts while Georgia DOT mobilizes equipment and materials to being repairs Thursday, DOT said.

On Thursday, DOT said, it plans to repair the road, removing a damaged area of roadway at least 40 feet wide, 175 feet long and 3 inches deep. One lane and shoulder will be closed at a time and traffic will be led through the area by a pilot truck.

The work is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. and conclude by 4 p.m. unless unforeseen damage is found, DOT said.
