Police in South Georgia dug up a body based on a tip from police in metro Atlanta.

Officers with the Clayton County Police Department interviewed a man Friday who suggested that police in Valdosta do some digging, Officer Phong Nguyen told the AJC.

Valdosta detectives followed up on the tip about a body in the yard of an abandoned house. Officers unearthed bones in the back yard of a Church Street home whose prior resident hadn't been seen in over a year, the Valdosta Daily Times reported.

The remains were found Friday with the help of cadaver dogs, Valdosta police told the Daily Times.

The tipster in Clayton was interviewed after police were called to a residence on a "person needs attention call," Nguyen said.

"Through their investigation, they determined that something did happen in Valdosta," he said. It turns out the tipster was wanted for probation violation, so he was arrested.

Nguyen told the AJC on Sunday that the tipster was being held at Grady Memorial Hospital while receiving medical attention. Clayton County Police did not release his identity.

Nguyen declined to comment on if the tipster was considered a suspect, but Valdosta police are working the case as a homicide investigation with help from Clayton police.
