The Clayton County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday announced that Michael Register is the permanent police chief. Register began as interim police chief June 28.

He has 28 years of law enforcement experience including extensive experience as a police instructor.

The board chose Register after asking a series of questions ranging from thoughts on body cameras to how they would handle community policing. Register said he was in favor of equipping officers with body cameras as a transparent safety measure for both officers and residents.

“If you’re doing your job in the way it’s supposed to be done, then the camera will be your best friend,” Register said.
