Clayton authorities draining lake in search for drowned boy
Authorities said they will drain a Clayton County lake to search for the 15-year-old boy who drowned Saturday after chasing an errant basketball into the water.
Clayton County Police Capt. Tina Daniel told the AJC late Monday that Lake Atlanta is being drained "because the lake is a natural green space so there is a lot of undergrowth we are dealing with."
The police dive team, the Clayton County Fire Department and the state Department of Natural Resources have been searching for the boy since Saturday.
The boy, whose identity has not been publicly released, was walking along the lake about 1:15 p.m. Saturday when the ball he was carrying popped loose, police said. He apparently got tangled up in weeds and bushes in the lake, police said.
Friends rushed into the lake to try to save him, but were unable to reach him.
