A newly discovered Civil War trench will be mostly preserved by Thomas Home and Communities in its newly approved residential senior living community.

The Cobb County Board of Commissioners recently approved rezoning at 2952 Ernest Barrett Parkway for 76 single-family detached cottages, costing $329,000 and up with such amenities as a community garden and a pool.

Attorney John Moore, representing Thomas Homes, said the Civil War trench will be the centerpiece of a 3-acre park as a part of the development’s 21.6 acres with 700 feet of the trench’s 900 feet to be preserved.

Split-rail fences will surround the trench on Burnt Hickory Road to maintain the entire area as an historical open space.

A handful of residents - and 105 more by petition - voiced their opposition to the residential development, citing the density and traffic.
