A citizens oversight committee charged with reviewing the county’s policies and procedures, met Wednesday and began prioritizing the county’s essential services during the current economic times.

Topping the list of 19 items were public safety, roads and water and sewer. Toward the bottom were adult sports, along with social services and public health, which are mainly state functions.

The discussion centered on the role of government and spurred debate over the handling of economic development,  the importance of public transportation and the county’s contributions to mandated services like public health.

The committee is scheduled to meet again next Wednesday.
