An early morning fire destroyed nearly a third of a Troup County church on Sunday.

Firefighters from the Troup County Fire Department arrived on the scene at 7:03 a.m., to find the sanctuary of Teaver Road Baptist Church fully ablaze, said Troup County Fire Chief Jerry Heard. No one was inside the brick building when fire fighters arrived, he said. No injuries of either firefighters or congregants were reported. Officials are still investigating the cause of the fire. Teaver Road is currently blocked off between West Point Road and Hill Road.

The sanctuary, built in 1974, was one of three buildings on the campus at 215 Teaver Rd. The Sunday school building and the family life center were spared from the blaze, said Heard. The church has about 400 members, though most Sundays attendance hovers around 200. As 58 fire fighters worked to contain the fire, several members of the congregation gathered in the road by the church to pray and hold a small service, Heard said.

“They prayed for the church and they prayed for our safety too,” he said. By 10 a.m. the blaze was under control, about the time Sunday school classes would normally have begun.
