Child's death under investigation in Clayton County

A 2-year-old child died as he and three siblings were being transported to a Clayton County hospital Wednesday afternoon, according to police.

Police and firefighters were called to the Marquis Grande Apartments near Jonesboro to investigate a report of four sick children, Clayton County police told Channel 2 Action News.

As the children, ages 8 months to 5 years, were being transported to various hospitals for treatment, one child died, police said.

According to a spokeswoman for the fire department, the children's father was home with the children and tried to call 911 with his phone, but the phone would not work and he ran the baby to the leasing office at the apartment complex.

A hazardous materials team searched the apartment, but did not locate anything suspicious, the fire department said.

Two of the children were later released from the hospital.

Investigators had not determined late Wednesday what caused the boy's death.
